This Week in Golf: September 9, 2003
These are the dog days of the professional golf season, which makes it easy to turn our attention toward football, even if just for the first few weeks. For the college football fan, we've tied everything together with Shane Sharp's guide to the SEC season, complete with suggestions for the best games and weekend golf outings.
Even if you're not planning a football/golf trip, chances are you're one of the millions who are playing fantasy football this year, which leads me to my question of the week: Why isn't fantasy golf more popular? (Even fantasy racing has more participants.) Perhaps it's because golf fans have better things to do? Or maybe golf just doesn't lend itself to the fantasy sports structure. My hunch is that golf fans are just waiting for an ideal game. Once someone devises the perfect fantasy game for golf, don't be surprised to see the number of participants increase dramatically.
Until then, I'll be quite content planning my next golf weekend while watching the San Diego Chargers try to avoid another December meltdown. If you're planning your fall golf trip, be sure to check out our usual full roster of reviews and travel features this week, including entries from Illinois and Canada. As always, feel free to add your comments on any topic, including your two cents on fantasy golf. Have a great week.

Big Bertha set to devour Top-Flite
As it turns out, the recent sale of the non-golf portion of Top-Flite -- the revered Spalding name brand -- was a prelude to the bankruptcy. Even though Callaway has placed an offer of $125 million in cash, it's not a done deal yet (although it's awfully close). In other equipment news, Kiel Christianson learns how Liquidmetal Golf and LMG Sports are battling to compete in a crowded market.

Consistency key to
Mucha's LPGA success
She may not be a household name, and she has no desire to tee it up with the men like she did back in the day, but after 16 years and five victories on the LPGA Tour, Barb Mucha is perfectly content. With many options in front of her, including television commentary, teaching, and other golf industry opportunities, don't look for this Parma Heights native to go away anytime soon.
